Excellent!

Five Stars! My copy of Tracks of the New York City Subway 2022 arrived on time in excellent condition. Author Paul Dougherty provides a well-researched, thorough overview of the city's extensive subway system, touching on its history; construction; track numbering and destination designations; routes; signaling, control and power systems; towers; codes; rolling stock; work equipment; yards; and much more, including a helpful glossary. The centerpiece of the book is comprised of Dougherty's full-color maps of the tracks of the New York subway, which occupy 117 of the book's 166 pages, a true bargain! The 2023 edition could benefit from the addition of a table of contents and an index as well as the use of in-text parenthetical numbers to direct readers to pages that contain supplementary information concerning topics under discussion. For example, on page xxxvii of the book's introduction, after identifying several “disused stretches of tunnel,” the author states simply that “all of these are shown on the main map pages later on,” instead of designating the specific map page or pages related to each of the abandoned tunnels mentioned in the introduction's text. However, as Dougherty points out, his book, obviously a labor of love, is a continuing work in progress, and it is a gold mine of information and maps that is well worth buying. Highly recommended!
